Symptoms of This Weird Cat Disorder. By Dr. Becker. I often write about the uniqueness of felines. Your kitty is not only very different from your dog (if you have one) – she stands apart from most other species.
Her physiology is distinctive. Her nutritional requirements are unique among mammals. Even the way her body is constructed – her incredible physical flexibility – is distinct from most other creatures. Another thing that is very unusual about our kitty companions is their tendency to develop a weird disorder called feline hyperesthesia. This is a medical term for what is more commonly referred to as . The rippling is visible in some cats, but more difficult to see with others. What many pet owners notice first is the kitty turning toward her tail suddenly as though something back there is bothering her. She may try to lick or bite at the area. And most cats with this condition will take off running out of the blue as though something scared them or is chasing them. Kitties with hyperesthesia also have muscle spasms and twitches, and twitching of the tail. If your cat has the syndrome, he may show sensitivity when any point along his spine or back is touched. He may chase his tail, bite at himself, turn toward his tail and hiss, vocalize, run and jump. These poor kitties suffer not only hair loss, but often severe skin lesions from trying too aggressively to seek relief from the uncomfortable sensations they experience. Causes of . A bad case of FAD can cause your cat to lick and scratch so aggressively – most often at the base of the tail or hind quarters – that he loses a significant amount of hair on that part of his body. Sometimes dry, itchy skin can induce or aggravate a hyperesthesia condition. This is more common in cats fed a dry food diet. Or more precisely, feline hyperesthesia may be a type of seizure disorder. Some kitties experience grand mal seizures during an episode of hyperesthesia or right afterwards. Experts theorize the syndrome might be caused by a problem with electrical activity in areas of the brain that control grooming, emotions and predatory behavior. It may also be a form of obsessive compulsive disorder, with the obsession being fearfulness and/or grooming and/or aggression. Also, seizure activity is known to lead to obsessive compulsive behavior. Another theory is that certain breeds are predisposed to develop mania as a result of stress. Oriental breeds seem to have more hyperesthesia than the general population of felines, and stress often seems to be the trigger for these kitties. Also, cats with the condition have been found to have lesions in the muscles of their spine. It’s possible the lesions cause or contribute to the sensations and symptoms that are a feature of hyperesthesia. Diagnosis. A diagnosis of feline hyperesthesia is arrived at through eliminating other conditions and diseases that cause similar symptoms and behavior, including. When all other potential causes for your pet’s symptoms have been ruled out or treated, feline hyperesthesia can be confidently diagnosed. Treatment of True Feline Hyperesthesia The treatment for feline hyperesthesia syndrome involves reducing stress on the cat. However, I recommend looking at what you’re feeding your cat first. She should be eating a balanced, species- appropriate diet that contains no carbs, moderate amounts of animal fat, and high levels of animal protein. This will help eliminate any food allergies she may be dealing with, and will improve the condition of her skin and coat. You can also consider supplementing with a rich source of omega- 3 fatty acids like krill oil. To address stress- related triggers, you’ll need to take steps to make your cat as comfortable as possible with his living arrangements. This means building a great deal of consistency in your cat's daily routine, while at the same time enriching the five key areas of his environment, including: Safe, secure food, water and litter box locations. His own places to climb, scratch, rest and hide. Consistency in all your interactions with him. Appropriate sensory stimulation. The company of another or other non- adversarial cats. Set aside time each day to play with your cat. This helps him get aerobic exercise and gives him the chance to flex his hunter muscles. Use interactive toys like a feather wand or a toy at the end of a string. Many cats also love chasing laser toys, ping pong balls and even rolled up bits of paper. Since cats have very short attention spans, try to break up playtime into three or four short sessions a day. Drug Therapy. Giving your cat anti- depressants, anti- convulsants or drugs to curb obsessive behavior should be considered only as a last resort. A species- appropriate diet, environmental enrichment, and natural remedies like Spirit Essences. Opti. Balance cat and kitten formulas. Feline hypertension or high blood pressure in cats is a serious condition that can significantly damage a cat's body. I have had good success in reducing symptoms using adjunctive therapies. Acupuncture can commonly reduce the . Chiropractic care can also reduce the dermatome neuritis hyperesthetic cats are plagued with. Ttouch. 3, a special form of massage, can also help reduce skin sensitivity in some cats. I’ve also had good success with kitties using homeopathic Aconitum and Hypericum orally to help dampen emotional and neurologic reactivity that can lead to physiologic symptoms. Deborah was at her wit’s end. Those were her exact words when she first told me what her cat, Miette, was going through and how it was affecting both of their lives. Feline leukemia virus (aka FeLV or simply “cat leukemia”) is the leading cause of death in household cats. Learn about the symptoms and treatment on petMD. Guide to Feline leukemia. Read about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of leukemia in cats and feline leukemia symptoms. Feline Endocrine Alopecia. Interval Cardio on Treadmill for Fat Loss. By Darin Steen. Have you tried doing standard cardio workouts faithfully, yet found you still haven't reached your fat loss goals? I believe that interval cardio, is the 3. I have used it almost exclusively for my personal fitness routine for the last 1. Most of my clients perform their interval workouts on a treadmill. Because it works so well for me, I have had 9. That's a lot of people considering I've had over 5. What you eat after cardio and after a weight training workouts are not always one in the same. Weight training is geared towards muscle gain, while cardio is mostly. Can fasted cardio in the morning help you lose more fat? Find out if it will benefit you, and how you should implement it for best results. Reality: This is physically impossible, Greenspan says. Exercise such as strength training will help. One of the most frequently asked questions I get as a fitness professional is, "If I am going to do my cardio and strength training on the same day, which comes first. But who's right, and. Most people attempting to lose fat will use diet and exercise strategies that make it impossible to preserve muscle. Fasted cardio works, but only if you're on. Here's why: When you start your workout with. By Darin Steen. Have you tried doing standard cardio workouts faithfully, yet found you still haven't reached your fat loss goals? I believe that interval cardio, is. Week Fat loss Lifestyle Body Transformation Program. They did it. And so can you. Advantages of Interval Cardio. There's increasing amounts of evidence supporting the notion that you can cut your workout time significantly while reaping better benefits, and if this appeals to you, then interval cardio is your ticket to success. Although I describe using a treadmill in this article, Dr. Mercola's favorite is the recumbent bike and the elliptical. You can easily perform the Peak Fitness exercises on those pieces of equipment. There are numerous advantages to using this technique: You burn extra calories for up to 8 hours after your interval session. With jogging you stop burning extra calories when you stop exercising. Your heart and lungs become bigger, stronger, and able to take on sudden intense challenges more easily and recover quickly. With jogging, your heart and lungs actually become smaller. Having a bigger and stronger heart and lungs is very important in order to live long and strong. Your body changes the way you store your carbs in the future. To help fuel future intense interval challenges your body will become more efficient at converting carbs into glucose and glycogen, which means that you will have more fuel for short bursts of intense challenges like lifting weights or running 1. Another side benefit is that glucose and glycogen is anabolic. It burns energy just sitting there. Fat does not. With low- intensity jogging- type cardio your body becomes more efficient at converting carbs to body fat in order to get ready for future low intensity jogging sessions. Fat is your body's preferred source of fuel for jogging, whereas glycogen is the preferred source of fuel for interval- type cardio. Interval cardio is much more time efficient. You only need about two to three 3. Traditionally many have jogged for between four and 8 hours per week. As fast paced as most people's lives are these days, less is better. In order for most people to stay consistent with exercise, it can only consume three to five hours per week, including cardio, resistance training, stretching and flexibility work. Well, whether you adopt my interval cardio program, outlined below, or go with Dr. Mercola's Peak Fitness exercise, which is an even higher intensity, burst- type interval training, you'll only need to spend a fraction of that time in the gym. High- intensity interval training (Peak Fitness exercises) will also naturally boost your body's production of human growth hormone, which is a very important factor in aging and overall health. Advantages of Interval Cardio Performed On a Treadmill. Most people stay more consistent with interval training because you can control the climate and the variables (speed and incline), which can be very helpful. Because you can control the variables, your interval cardio session can be more precisely carried out. It's safer on your joints, tendons and ligaments because of the shock absorption of the tread on the tread mill. In addition, you can alsokeep your body tight and have proper technique so that the majority of the pounding goes into your muscles (which is good) and stays out of your bones, ligaments and tendons (not good). It is simply not possible to hold your body tight during 6. Therefore a lot of the pounding goes into the bad places. It's more functional than a stationary bike or elliptical. On a bike or elliptical your legs get worked more, and balance and stability does not, whereas sprints on a treadmill tie your upper body to your lower body through your core. Most sprinters have incredible abs because of this benefit. Sprinters get their abs from sprinting, not from doing sit ups. The Warm- Up Routine. It is very important to warm up before getting into the challenges. Perform a power walk stride for 1. Three technique reminders for a proper power walk stride are: Stand tall with shoulders back (soldier stance) Heels hit the tread first Long stride challenge (legs stay relatively stiff and lengthen stride out as long as possible on each stride) Start the warm up with a speed that does not feel too fast or too slow. Increase the speed by 0. Lengthen your stride throughout the warm up. Your height and your experience with power walking will usually dictate how fast you start off. I am 5'9 and 3. 5 mph hour feels about right for me. If you are around 5'4. If you are 6 feet tall, try 4. Over the course of the 1. I go from 3. 5 mph to 4. After the 1. 0 minute warm up, bring the speed back down to the speed you started with. We call it baseline. That's the speed you go back to after each challenge, to rest and recover. At this point get off the treadmill and stretch your quads, glutes (buns), hamstrings, and inner thighs, and calves. Doing so will allow you to be more symmetrical during the intense sprinting phase of the more advanced challenges. It's just like a car that is out of alignment. At 2. 0 mph you won't notice a problem. But increase to 1. That is what the stretching will do for you. It will more properly align your body so you can run better and safer. Guidelines for a Successful Interval Cardio Routine. Now you are ready to start your first challenge. You have many options for Interval Cardio on a treadmill. I'll cover two versions here. My own, followed by Dr. Mercola's Peak Fitness exercise which can be done with or without exercise equipment, such as a treadmill, elliptical, or recumbent bike. The one that works well for me and my clients is: Each challenge is a 6. Use this same technique for the first phase (power walk) of each challenge. The technique for the 3. Your heels may not hit the tread at all. This assures that more of the jolt of your stride will go into your muscles rather than your bones, joints, and ligaments. To create a sprint type feeling for the last 1. The sprint is merely a more intense version of the jog by driving the knees as high as possible. At the end of the 1. Reduce the treadmill's speed to baseline. Let the tread slow down a few seconds before you start walking on the tread to recover. Make sure to bring your incline down to 0 for the recovery phase. In between each challenge, keep walking at a nice slow pace to aid in recovery. On each progressive challenge, increase the 6. Increase each 3. 0 second jog by 0. The speed for the sprint stays the same as for the jog. Simply intensify the jog technique with high knees. The rest periods get longer as each progressive challenge gets more intense. The length of each challenge stays constant but the length of each rest increases. Before you start your next challenge, make sure that you totally have your breath back. Also make sure that your energy level comes back to 9 out of 1. Just ask yourself, am I ready to take on the next 9. Rest longer than shorter. One of the main keys to a successful interval cardio session is intensity during each challenge. That's why it is important to be as recovered as possible before each challenge. While having access to a gym or exercise equipment will provide you with a larger variety of options, you don't require either. You can just as easily perform this by walking or running on flat ground. You'll want to start slow and work your way up, but ultimately you want to exercise vigorously enough so you reach your anaerobic threshold, because this is where the growth hormone release is triggered. Since Sprint 8 exercises are an even more intense version of interval cardio, it requires even less time. The actual sprinting totals only 4 minutes! Here's what a typical Peak Fitness routine might look like using a recumbent bike: Warm up for three minutes Push yourself as hard and fast as you can for 3. You should feel like you couldn't possibly go on another few seconds Recover for 9. Repeat the high intensity exercise and recovery 7 more times As you see, whereas my guidelines call for a 6. Sprint 8 goes right into a 3. With Sprint 8, by the end of your 3. It will be relatively hard to breathe and talk because you are in oxygen debt You will start to sweat profusely. Typically this is occurs in the second or third repetition unless you have a potential thyroid issue and don't sweat much normally. Your body temperature will rise Lactic acid increases and you will feel a muscle . If you are not in great shape and just starting this you may want to start with just two or three repetitions, and work your way up to eight. You may even need to start with just walking and when you do your 3. The Earlier the Better, When it Comes to Exercising. I strongly suggest that you do your interval cardio first thing in the morning before you eat your first meal. Your body will then burn up to twice as much body fat, since you have not eaten for 6- 1. Cardio sessions done later in the day do not burn as much body fat. The main reason why is because of the carbs ingested earlier in the day are turned into glucose and used to fuel the cardio session. In addition, cardio sessions planned for later in the day don't get done as consistently. Something invariably is going to come up that will conflict with the work out time. Bottom line is that you will burn more fat and skip less work outs if you make exercise part of your morning routine. Final Thoughts. Interval cardio is one of the most effective workouts I have ever had my clients use. It leads to staying consistent long term. It is one of the more safe and effective interval cardio sessions you will ever come across. Accompanied with this article is our . After you've watched the video above, take the cheat sheet with you and put in the cup holder of your treadmill. Should You Do Cardio Before or After Weights? Cardio is maligned by so called . But who's right, and what is the best recipe for results? Is there a magic ratio of weight training to cardio that should be done? Should cardio be cast aside for a heavier dose of strength training? Does cardio before the workout destroy your gains? If your goal in training is to lose weight and look better naked, then on a molecular level, your goal is to burn through all your muscle glycogen in order to start burning fat as fuel. Here's the science. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the fuel that your muscles need in order to contract, but there is only a limited amount contained within each muscle, and when it's gone your body needs to produce more somehow. There are three main energy systems at work in your body. Here, I will only be addressing two of them. Name: Anaerobic system (lactic acid system): What it does: Breaks down glycogen using a complicated chemical reaction that leaves lactic acid as a by- product, which is responsible for the intense burn you get after hiking up a long hill or doing a long set of biceps curls. Used During: Short duration high intensity activities like sprinting and strength training. Anaerobic System Conversion: 1 molecule glycogen = 3 ATP. Name: Aerobic System (oxygen system)What it does: Uses an even more complex chemical reaction to break down glycogen into ATP using oxygen (remember the KREB cycle from 1. This is why you breathe harder during cardio than strength training, because your body needs more and more oxygen to sustain your workout. Used during: Long duration medium intensity activities like jogging or rowing. This system turns on after 8- 1. Each molecule of glycogen can be broken down into 3. ATP in this cycle, which is great for sustaining longer term exercise. Aerobic System Conversion: 1 molecule glycogen = 3. ATP. This is a much more efficient conversion, and can provide more sustained energy than the anaerobic system. Depending on the activity, it can take up to an hour to use up all the glycogen stored in your cells and liver, at which point the body has no choice but to start burning fat as fuel. Which is the goal for most of us who are trying to shed our winter weight and fit into last year's swim suit. This hour marker mentioned above is highly dependent on diet as well, which is why a low carb diet can work extremely well for fat loss especially when coupled with exercise. The more carbohydrates that are eaten before a workout, the more glycogen remains in your system to burn off before fat can be used as fuel. Cardio before a workout. Energy system trained: Aerobic. Cardio after the workout. Energy System trained: Anaerobic. Pros and Cons. Cardio First. Cardio before a workout is great because it gives you the opportunity to burn more calories over the course of the training session by elevating your heart rate initially. This increases your internal temperature and elevates the metabolic demands placed on your body. This ensures your heart rate will remain elevated, and thus overall caloric burn will be increased for the entire workout. The downside is that you'll be more tired after doing cardio, and won't have as much energy to spend on resistance training, which is better for making lasting physique changes. Cardio Last. Since the aerobic system is much more efficient in terms of generating ATP, weight training first is great because it allows you to get to the fat burning portion of the workout faster than if you had done cardio first. Focusing the majority of your energy on making improvements in the weight room, will result in better strength and physique. The downside to this technique is that it can be difficult to work hard at resistance training, and then push yourself through a cardio session immediately after. So Which is Better? Think about burning fat like digging for gold. You have to get through layers of dirt and rock (muscle glycogen) before you can get to the gold. Doing cardio first is like digging for gold with a shovel. Getting through a single layer requires 3. You'll eventually see gold, but it will take a while. Doing resistance training first is like showing up to the same dig site with a backhoe. Now only 3 scoops are required to get through one layer thanks to your diesel fueled machinery. So if you're short on time, or just want to maximize your workout so you can get back to your family, pets or World of Warcraft character, hit the weights first and save the cardio for the end. You already know to eat your daily servings of vegetables, but when is the last time you gave any thought to your sea vegetables? Kelp, a type of seaweed, is chock full of good- for- you nutrients that can benefit your health and possibly even prevent disease. Already a staple in many Asian cuisines, this type of sea algae is a natural source of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. What Is Kelp? You may have seen this marine plant at the beach. Kelp is a type of large brown seaweed that grows in shallow, nutrient- rich saltwater, near coastal fronts around the world. It differs slightly in color, flavor, and nutrient profile from the type you may see in sushi rolls. Kelp also produces a compound called sodium alginate. This is used as a thickener in many foods you may eat, including ice cream and salad dressing. But you can eat natural kelp in many different forms, including: rawcookedpowderedin supplements. Nutritional Benefits. Because it absorbs the nutrients from its surrounding marine environment, kelp is rich in: vitaminsmineralstrace elementsenzymes. You already know to eat your daily servings of vegetables, but when is the last time you gave any thought to your sea vegetables? Kelp, a type of seaweed, is chock.According to nutritionist Vanessa Stasio Costa, M. S., R. D. N., C. D. N., kelp “is often considered a . It’s especially concentrated in iodine, which is important for optimal thyroid function and metabolism.”The National Institutes of Health (NIH) say that seaweed such as kelp is one of the best natural food sources of iodine, an essential component in thyroid hormone production. A deficiency in iodine leads to metabolism disruption and can also lead to an enlargement of the thyroid gland known as goiter. But beware of too much iodine. Overconsumption can create health issues, too. The key is to get a moderate amount to raise energy levels and brain functioning. It is difficult to get too much iodine in natural kelp but this could be an issue with supplements. Stasio Costa also notes that kelp contains notable amounts of: ironmanganesecalciummagnesiumcopperzincriboflavinniacinthiaminvitamins A, B- 1. B- 6, and CThe benefits of these vitamins and nutrients are substantial. B vitamins in particular are essential for cellular metabolism and providing your body with energy. According to UCSF Medical Center, kelp has more calcium than many vegetables, including kale and collard greens. Calcium is important to maintain strong bones and optimal muscle function. Disease- Fighting Abilities. Since inflammation and stress are considered risk factors for many chronic diseases, Stasio Costa says including kelp in one's diet could have numerous health benefits. Kelp is naturally high in antioxidants, including carotenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which help to fight against disease- causing free radicals. Antioxidant vitamins like vitamin C, and minerals like manganese and zinc, help to combat oxidative stress and may offer benefits to cardiovascular health. There have been many claims regarding kelp’s abilities to fight chronic disease, including cancer. Recent studies have explored the role of sea vegetables in estrogen- related and colon cancers, osteoarthritis, and other conditions. Researchers found that kelp can slow the spread of colon and breast cancers. A compound found in kelp called fucoidan may also prevent the spread of lung cancer and prostate cancer. This doesn’t mean that kelp should be used to cure any diseases or be considered a guaranteed protection against disease. Weight Loss Claims In recent years, researchers have looked into kelp’s potential fat blocking properties. Because kelp contains a natural fiber called alginate, studies suggest that it may halt the absorption of fat in the gut. A study published in Food Chemistry found that alginate could help block fat absorption in the intestines by 7. In order to reap the benefits of alginate, the research team plans to add the thickening compound to common foods such as yogurt and bread. Kelp may have great potential for diabetes and obesity, although research is still preliminary. A study published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found that a compound in the chloroplasts of brown seaweed called fucoxanthin may promote weight loss in obese patients when combined with pomegranate oil. Studies also suggest that brown seaweed may influence glycemic control and reduce blood glucose levels, benefitting people with type 2 diabetes. In addition to its potential to slow down fat absorption in the gut, kelp is low in fat and calories. How to Eat Kelp. Thankfully, you don’t need to go diving in the ocean to reap the benefits. Kelp is available in a variety of forms. Nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz, R. D., C. D. N., C. P. T., recommends that you try to eat your nutrients, versus taking them in supplement form. She suggests including kelp in a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, from both the land and sea. Kelp can be one small part of a broader healthy diet that includes a variety of unprocessed, nutrient- dense foods. Moskovitz says that one of the easiest ways to incorporate kelp into your diet is to add an organic, dried variety into soups. You could also use raw kelp noodles in salads and main dishes or add some dried kelp flakes as seasoning. It is usually found in Japanese or Korean restaurants or grocery stores and can be enjoyed cold with oil and sesame seeds, hot in a soup or stew, or even blended into a vegetable juice. Too Much of the Good Stuff? Health advisers warn that ingesting concentrated amounts of kelp can introduce excessive amounts of iodine to the body. This can overstimulate the thyroid and cause harm. There are significant health risks to consuming excessive iodine. It’s important to only eat kelp in moderation, and it should be avoided by those suffering from hyperthyroidism. Nutritionist Stasio Costa notes that because kelp and other sea vegetables take up minerals from the waters they inhabit, they can also absorb dangerous heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, and lead. She recommends seeking out certified organic versions of sea vegetables and to look for packages that mention that the product has been tested for arsenic. Potential Uses and Health Benefits of Kelp People avoiding sea foods may develop iodine deficiency. Iodine deficiency can lead to low thyroid function. Kelp has been used in treating certain thyroid problems. In his book "Plant Medicine in Practice," herbal medicine expert and. 29 Responses to Iodine benefits your thyroid and helps to accelerate fat loss? Always consult a health professional before beginning any supplementation regimen. Iodine: A Critical Mineral For Weight Loss. If adjusting your diet and exercising more hasn’t helped you reach a healthy body weight, you may have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland. Fortunately, you can help normalize an underactive thyroid gland by increasing your intake of the mineral iodine. The consumption of sea vegetables enjoys a long history throughout the world. Archaeological evidence suggests that Japanese cultures have been consuming sea. Many individuals in the medical mainstream believed for a long time that the only purpose of iodine was as a precursor for the. Your thyroid gland is dependent upon iodine. Mitigate weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, dry skin. Iodine may just be the most overlooked mineral, yet its importance to overall health and well being cannot be overstated. Iodine is critical for the formation of thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. People who have difficulty losing weight even though they eat small portions of health promoting foods may be short on iodine. Symptoms of iodine deficiency. Its deficiency can lead to dull and brittle hair, balding, lack of skin tone, low energy levels, difficulty dealing with environmental temperature change, poor concentration, constipation, depression, and extreme fatigue. In addition to low thyroid functioning, symptoms of iodine deficiency include depression, weight gain, weak heartbeat, extreme dry hair and skin, swelling of the legs, decreased ability to concentrate, muscle cramps, puffiness or swelling of the eyes, and chronic aches and pains. Fatigue is a common symptom, characterized by the urge to fall asleep when not active. Hypersensitivity to cold, or cold hands and feet is another frequently reported symptom. When the metabolism is not up to par, there is less energy and heat produced. Why many people are iodine deficient? Health conscious people expect conventional produce to be grown in soils deficient in essential minerals. They may be surprised to find out that organic produce is also often lacking sufficient amounts of iodine. Its adequate intake was once a recognized problem that was solved by adding small amounts of it in the processing of table salt. Once this was done, the obvious symptoms of severe iodine deficiency disappeared from view, and little further thought was given to matter, though sub- clinical symptoms remained. Today’s health conscious consumers have lowered their salt intake and now fail to get even that small amount of iodine in their diets. Many people have replaced processed iodized salt with sea salt, an obvious healthy alternative, except that sea salt does not naturally contain a significant amount. Functions of Iodine in the body. A shortage can cause changes to the thyroid gland that directly lead to poor function of metabolism and immunity. Iodine deficiency promotes free radical damage in the thyroid gland that puts the gland itself at risk. Iodine blocks various compounds from binding to and accumulating in the thyroid gland, such as fluoride, perchlorate, and goitrogens. Environmental pollution significantly aggravates an iodine lack and displaces iodine in the body. It is in high concentration in the ovaries and breast tissue, acting as a buffer to the growth stimulating effects of estrogen and as a promoter of proper estrogen metabolism. It assists the functioning of hormone receptors throughout the body, helping hormones communicate more effectively. Thyroid hormone governs the rate of other hormone formation, and thus governs sexual function. It is essential for proper brain development and cognitive ability. There have been many studies showing its importance during gestation when cognitive potential is formed. A mother with adequate iodine levels will be more likely to produce a child with superior brain development. Results of Iodine Deficiency. Its deficiency traditionally results in hypothyroidism, goiter, and cretinism. Researchers hypothesized that iodine deficiency may also give rise to subtle impairment of thyroid function leading to clinical syndromes resembling hypothyroidism or diseases that have been associated with the occurrence of hypothyroidism. Studies have described several clinical conditions suspected to be linked to iodine deficiency, including obesity, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), psychiatric disorders, fibromyalgia, and malignancies. The trace elements iodine and selenium are essential for thyroid gland functioning and thyroid hormone biosynthesis and metabolism. While iodine is needed as the eponymous constituent of the two major thyroid hormones T3 and T4, selenium is essential for the biosynthesis and function of small numbers of selenocysteine containing enzymes that control thyroid hormone turnover. An underactive thyroid can encourage water retention, leading to excess weight and cellulite. Low thyroid function has recently been linked with lethargy and depression. If you tend to have slow digestion and elimination, excess catarrh, or sinus trouble, and generally feel down in the dumps during humid weather, seaweeds high in potassium, calcium, and iodine are for you. Asian Health Secrets by Letha Hadady DAc, page 1. Determining iodine deficiency. Due to the fact that its deficiency can have serious consequences, it is important for people to use iodine supplementation if they are not regularly getting adequate amounts from food. Good food sources of iodine are dairy products produced from cattle fed iodine- supplemented feed and salt licks, iodized salt, seafood, saltwater fish, seaweed, and kelp. It may also be found in asparagus, garlic, lima beans, mushrooms, sesame seed, spinach, chard, and summer squash. Some foods block the uptake of iodine into the thyroid gland when eaten raw in large amounts, such as cabbage, kale, peaches, pears and spinach. Pregnant women, the elderly and adolescents are more predisposed to iodine deficiency. More women than men are short on iodine. Iodine Daily Recommended Amount Micrograms (/d): Females: Years. Iodine from kelp is naturally in the form of potassium iodide, which is not soluble in water and may be difficult for the body to use. Iosol, another iodine product that is made with iodine extracted from kelp and made into pure iodine crystals, is unbound from the potassium. The crystals are combined with ammonium iodide, a form that readily dissolves in water. The result is an iodine supplement with high bio- availability. Both kelp and Iosol supplements are highly affordable. Remember, that the healthy functioning of the thyroid is essential to maintain metabolism and prevent the accumulation of body fat. The gallstones diet is your answer to help prevent gallstones from forming in your gallbladder. To free you from the discomfort associated with getting gallstones, here are a few things you should change in your diet. Increase your Fiber Intake. Instead of eating a fatty meal, substitute it with foods high in fiber. Some sources of fiber include fruits and vegetables. Including fiber in your gallstone diet helps increase the movement of your digestive tract, thus eliminating excess fats and toxins in your body. Although fiber may not eliminate gallstones totally, it can reduce their number and make you feel better. Eat Small Frequent Meals. The diet for gallstones suggests that you eat small but frequent meals. Avoid over- eating, as it can stress your gallbladder. Instead of three full meals, you can distribute your meals into six small portions throughout the day. Avoid eating too much at night. If you ate too much, do not go to sleep right away. The pressure in your stomach can radiate to the nearby liver and gallbladder and cause you more pain. Drink More Fluid. Increase your water intake to help dissolve the stones and flush them out from your body. Ginger. When treating your gallstones, incorporate more ginger in your diet. Ginger aids in the digestion of fats. Add it to your regular recipes. This will help with your gallstones treatment. Foods to Avoid with Gallstones. Fatty foods. Since bile helps your body digest fats, a problem in your gallbladder (like gallstones) can lead to a malfunction in fat digestion. If left untreated, the stress experienced can exacerbate your pain. When you plan your meal, reduce your fat intake. You must also learn to substitute your fatty ingredients with low fat alternatives. Instead of frying, just boil or grill your food to reduce the amount of fats. With less stimulation for bile secretion, you can let your gallbladder rest and reduce the symptoms associated with the disorder. Processed foods. Other gallstones foods to avoid in your diet are processed and preserved foods. The high sodium in them can build- up in your body and worsen your condition. Choose fresh ingredients at all times. Avoid these drinks too. Avoid alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages. They will only increase the movement of your gallstones and lead to blockage. Final Thoughts. A good complement to any gallstone diet is following through with a cleanse that will help get rid of those painful gallbladder attacks. One resource which combines a good cleansing procedure with a diet is the Gallstone Removal Report. In any case, the gallbladder is an important organ in your body. When you experience pain and other problems with it, start adopting the gallstones diet, treat the problem and free yourself from the symptoms. You may also like. A Call for a Low- Carb Diet That Embraces Fat“To my knowledge, this is one of the first long- term trials that’s given these diets without calorie restrictions,” said Dariush Mozaffarian, the dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, who was not involved in the new study. And that’s really important because someone can change what they eat more easily than trying to cut down on their calories.”Photo. Credit. i. Stock Diets low in carbohydrates and higher in fat and protein have been commonly used for weight loss since Dr. Robert Atkins popularized the approach in the 1. Among the longstanding criticisms is that these diets cause people to lose weight in the form of water instead of body fat, and that cholesterol and other heart disease risk factors climb because dieters invariably raise their intake of saturated fat by eating more meat and dairy. Many nutritionists and health authorities have “actively advised against” low- carbohydrate diets, said the lead author of the new study, Dr. Bazzano of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. They had significantly greater reductions in body fat than the low- fat group, and improvements in lean muscle mass — even though neither group changed their levels of physical activity. While the low- fat group did lose weight, they appeared to lose more muscle than fat.“They actually lost lean muscle mass, which is a bad thing,” Dr. Mozaffarian said. And that’s a very important finding that shows why the low- carb, high- fat group did so metabolically well.”The high- fat group followed something of a modified Atkins diet. They were told to eat mostly protein and fat, and to choose foods with primarily unsaturated fats, like fish, olive oil and nuts. But they were allowed to eat foods higher in saturated fat as well, including cheese and red meat. A typical day’s diet was not onerous: It might consist of eggs for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch, and some kind of protein for dinner — like red meat, chicken, fish, pork or tofu — along with vegetables. Low- carb participants were encouraged to cook with olive and canola oils, but butter was allowed, too. Audio. Giving Robots That Human Touch, How Trees Really Work, Low Carb Versus Low Fat 2. Krisch and Jeffery Del. Viscio. Over all, they took in a little more than 1. American Heart Association. The majority of their fat intake, however, was unsaturated fats. The low- fat group included more grains, cereals and starches in their diet. They reduced their total fat intake to less than 3. The other group increased their total fat intake to more than 4. Both groups were encouraged to eat vegetables, and the low- carbohydrate group was told that eating some beans and fresh fruit was fine as well. In the end, people in the low- carbohydrate group saw markers of inflammation and triglycerides — a type of fat that circulates in the blood — plunge. The decrease in risk on the low-carbohydrate diet “should translate into a substantial benefit,” said Dr. Allan Sniderman, a professor. Their HDL, the so- called good cholesterol, rose more sharply than it did for people in the low- fat group. Blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL, the so- called bad cholesterol, stayed about the same for people in each group. Nonetheless, those on the low- carbohydrate diet ultimately did so well that they managed to lower their Framingham risk scores, which calculate the likelihood of a heart attack within the next 1. The low- fat group on average had no improvement in their scores. Photo. Credit. i. Stock The decrease in risk on the low- carbohydrate diet “should translate into a substantial benefit,” said Dr. Allan Sniderman, a professor of cardiology at Mc. Gill University in Montreal. One important predictor of heart disease that the study did not assess, Dr. Sniderman said, was the relative size and number of LDL particles in the bloodstream. Two people can have the same overall LDL concentration, but very different levels of risk depending on whether they have a lot of small, dense LDL particles or a small number of large and fluffy particles. Eating refined carbohydrates tends to raise the overall number of LDL particles and shift them toward the small, dense variety, which contributes to atherosclerosis. Saturated fat tends to make LDL particles larger, more buoyant and less likely to clog arteries, at least when carbohydrate intake is not high, said Dr. Krauss, the former chairman of the American Heart Association’s dietary guidelines committee. Small, dense LDL is the kind typically found in heart patients and in people who have high triglycerides, central obesity and other aspects of the so- called metabolic syndrome, said Dr. Krauss, who is also the director of atherosclerosis research at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute.“I’ve been a strong advocate of moving saturated fat down the list of priorities in dietary recommendations for one reason: because of the increasing importance of metabolic syndrome and the role that carbohydrates play,” Dr. Krauss said. Dr. Mozaffarian said the research suggested that health authorities should pivot away from fat restrictions and encourage people to eat fewer processed foods, particularly those with refined carbohydrates. The average person may not pay much attention to the federal dietary guidelines, but their influence can be seen, for example, in school lunch programs, which is why many schools forbid whole milk but serve their students fat- free chocolate milk loaded with sugar, Dr. Mozaffarian said. Do You Burn More Calories Drinking Ice Water or Tepid Water? On average, body weight is 4. This is equal to almost 1. Body composition, gender and age affect the amount of water in each person's body but for all people, water is essential! Every organ, tissue and body cell uses water to function. In addition to providing an aqueous solution for your cells, water helps regulate body temperature, transports oxygen and nutrients, and carries wastes out! It is found in gastric juice, saliva, urine, blood, and keeps exposed organs, like your eyes, moist. Under normal circumstances, the average adult loses about 2. As soon as you add physical activity or hot weather into the mix, the rate of water loss increases. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) advise an Adequate Intake (AI) of 3. But you get water from a variety of sources, including the food you eat and beverages you drink - - it is even produced as an end product of your body's metabolism. Keep in mind this rate goes up if you are sick, nursing/pregnant, sweating, on an airplane, exposed to extreme temperatures or exercising. The American Dietetic Association Complete Food and Nutrition Guide estimates that healthy sedentary adults need to replace bodily fluids at about 9- 1. In addition to fluid intake, 2. This is where the question on if drinking cold water will help you burn more calories, since we know that your body uses water to help regulate and keep a steady internal temperature. The amount of calories it would take your body to bring an 8 ounce glass of ice cold water up to body temperature is estimated to be about 8 calories. This is very dependent on your body's temperature and how cold the water is. The reality is that this is a negligible amount in the span of your day, and the act of getting up, walking to your freezer, emptying trays, refilling trays, turning on the facet and the ups and downs from urination will use more calories. However hydration is important for weight management, and many people find that colder water is more desirable than tepid water, and may increase your water intake. But drinking iced water alone will not have huge effects on weight- loss; overall reduction in calories and increasing exercise, in conjunction with good hydration, is still the best method. So whether you decide on cold water or tepid water, monitoring your water intake is a very vital and an important part of staying healthy. Safest Artificial Sweeteners. Emily De.
